SDR2HDR API vs Topaz Video AI: An Honest Comparison
Topaz Video AI is a widely-used desktop app with an HDR mode; mlslabs is a cloud API for the same kind of work. They serve different workflows, and the honest answer depends on whether you process one video at a time or ten thousand.
Scope & honesty
What we compare
We compare on dimensions that can be verified without vendor secrecy: workflow model, batch capability, pricing structure, hardware requirements and deployment options. We do not publish one-off quality scores, because side-by-side quality depends on your exact source footage — test both on your own files.
Topaz Hyperion is Topaz's HDR/remaster component inside Video AI (desktop). mlslabs SDR2HDR is a hosted API. Both do AI-driven SDR→HDR expansion.
Side by side
| Topaz Video AI (desktop) | mlslabs SDR2HDR API | |
|---|---|---|
| Workflow | GUI + command line on your workstation | REST API — submit jobs, get webhooks |
| Batch scale | Manual queue on one machine | Unlimited async jobs, parallel workers |
| Hardware | You need a beefy GPU (8+ GB VRAM recommended) | None — we run the GPUs |
| Pricing | Perpetual license + AI model packs | Per second of input video, free tier |
| Deployment | On-prem only | Hosted (SaaS) — data to our object storage |
| HDR output | HDR module within Video AI | HDR10 default, HDR10+/HLG on request |
| Automation | Scriptable but desktop-bound | Native pipeline integration, SDKs, Postman |
When Topaz is the right choice
Single-video projects, offline work, sensitive media that must never leave your machine, or teams that already own the license and the GPU. For a handful of files a month, a desktop tool is simpler and cheaper.
When the API wins
When video processing is a service you run, not a task you do: library remasters, customer-facing conversion, batch jobs with variable volume, CI/CD pipelines. The API turns a GPU workstation into a function call with per-second billing and no idle hardware cost.

FAQ
Common questions
Is Topaz Hyperion better quality than mlslabs?
Quality depends on your footage — test both. Topaz is a mature desktop product; our model is trained on professionally graded SDR/HDR pairs. We publish honest limits, not marketing scores.
Can I use both together?
Yes — many teams prototype in Topaz and scale with the API, or use the API for the library and Topaz for hero files.
Does the API need a GPU on my side?
No. You send object-storage URLs; we run the inference and write the HDR master back.
