What Is Frequency Masking — and Why It Ruins Your Mixes
Two instruments in the same frequency range — and one of them disappears. That is masking, the most common reason amateur mixes sound muddy.
The masking effect, plainly
When two stems overlap heavily in frequency, the louder one masks the other — the ear literally stops hearing the quieter one. Vocals vs guitars, kick vs bass, cymbals vs hi-hats: every mix fights this.
What human engineers do
EQ carving: cut space in one instrument so the other breathes. Sidechain: duck one stem when the other hits. Priority: decide what the listener must hear at every moment. All manual, all experience.
How AI handles it
The engine detects frequency collisions per time window, then applies priority-based resolution — preset order, spectral energy, or instantaneous loudness — so the lead stays audible. You set the priority rule; the AI executes it consistently across the whole track.
Why this is the difference between muddy and clear
Masking is the #1 reason stems sound worse summed than soloed. Resolution is not about making anything louder — it is about deciding what the listener hears, at every moment, on purpose.
