HDR10 vs Dolby Vision: What's the Difference?

Both are HDR. They are not competitors in quality so much as two different trade-offs: a royalty-free baseline almost every device plays, and a premium format with per-scene instructions — if your pipeline and budget allow it.

The one difference that matters: metadata

Both formats use the same PQ (SMPTE ST 2084) transfer function and the same wide-gamut BT.2020 primaries. The difference is what the display is told about the content.

HDR10 carries static metadata: one brightness reference for the entire title, derived from the brightest scene. A 100-nit dialogue scene in an otherwise 4,000-nit action movie is still tone-mapped against the 4,000-nit master, which can crush shadow detail or lift blacks.

Dolby Vision carries dynamic metadata: per-scene (roughly per-shot) brightness anchors, plus optional 12-bit processing. Each shot is tone-mapped with numbers that match what was graded. That is where most of the perceived quality gap comes from — not the 12-bit depth.

Brightness and bit depth

Consumer HDR10 is typically mastered to 1,000–4,000 nits; Dolby Vision masters commonly reference 4,000+ nits with headroom to 10,000. On the encode side, both can be delivered as 10-bit HEVC. Dolby Vision's 12-bit modes exist inside its IPT processing and dual-layer profiles; for streaming, single-layer profile 8.1 is the pragmatic choice and plays on a wide range of devices.

In practice the visible difference on a 1,000-nit TV is mostly the dynamic metadata. On a 4,000-nit reference display, Dolby Vision's larger canvas is genuinely visible in specular highlights.

Which should you deliver?

Deliver HDR10 first. It is free, plays everywhere, and gets 80% of the visual benefit for a fraction of the engineering cost. Add Dolby Vision later as a premium tier for flagship titles if the pipeline and licensing make sense — most platforms accept DV as a second version alongside HDR10.

If you are converting an existing SDR library to HDR, HDR10 is the natural target: the conversion model can produce static HDR10 metadata per scene at no extra cost, and you keep the universal compatibility.

Common questions

Is Dolby Vision really better than HDR10?

Visually, usually yes on capable displays, because per-scene metadata tone-maps each shot correctly. The gap is smaller on 1,000-nit TVs and negligible on phones. The real cost is licensing and ecosystem friction.

Can you convert HDR10 to Dolby Vision?

Technically you can author a DV version from an HDR10 master, but it needs Dolby licensing, certification and the DV toolchain. Dynamic metadata is not something an HDR10 file contains — it has to be authored, not converted.

Does HDR10 support 4,000 nits?

The format does not cap brightness — you can master to 4,000 nits with static metadata. Displays then tone-map based on their own capability, guided by that static anchor.

Is HDR10+ the same as Dolby Vision?

HDR10+ is Samsung's dynamic-metadata alternative: royalty-free and technically similar in spirit, but with a much smaller ecosystem than Dolby Vision.
