Vocal Isolation vs Noise Reduction: What's the Difference?

They get conflated constantly. One cleans a single track; the other splits a mix into independent tracks. Here is which one fixes your audio.

The core difference

Noise reduction subtracts steady noise (hiss, hum, room tone) from a single track. It cannot separate vocals from music — both are "signal" to it.

Vocal separation decouples the mix into two independent tracks: vocals and everything else. Once split, each track can be edited, processed or discarded on its own.

Why the two get confused

Consumer apps label everything "remove background noise". But a music bed is not noise — and the app that removes it is doing source separation, not denoising. Understanding the difference decides whether your pipeline even works.
