SDR2HDR Conversion vs Native HDR: An Honest Comparison
Native HDR is shot and graded for HDR from the first frame. Conversion starts from an SDR master and rebuilds HDR range. Both produce HDR files. The differences are real, and pretending otherwise is how bad tools get sold.

What conversion genuinely gets right
For archive and catalog content, conversion is the only economic path to HDR — there is no native HDR to go back to. A good model lifts shadow detail, expands gamut without shifting skin tones, and outputs 10-bit HDR10 files that look correct on modern displays. Done well, the result is often indistinguishable from a modest native HDR master to most viewers.
What conversion cannot do
It cannot re-create clipped highlights that were never captured. It cannot restore color that was crushed out of the 8-bit gamut. And it cannot recover the artistic intent that existed on the HDR grading stage — that intent does not exist for SDR-era content. Anyone selling conversion as a substitute for shooting HDR is selling a fantasy.
The practical rule
- New production → shoot and grade native HDR
- Existing SDR library → convert, don't re-shoot
- Mixed catalog → convert the clean masters, keep the rest SDR
- Marketing → HDR versions of new titles, converted for the archive

Is converted SDR2HDR as good as native HDR?
Not identical — native HDR preserves capture intent and full highlight range. For library content where native HDR does not exist, conversion is the best available option and is very good on clean masters.
Will viewers notice the difference?
On good displays, converted HDR holds up well for archive content. On 1,000+ nit displays, native HDR's specular highlights are visible in side-by-side A/B tests.
Can you convert a whole library?
Yes — that is the intended workload: async jobs, per-file webhooks, per-second billing.
