Channel-Based vs Object-Based Audio
Channels are where speakers are. Objects are where sounds are. This one conceptual shift — from 'which speaker' to 'which position' — drives everything about modern immersive audio production.
The two models
Channel-based audio (stereo, 5.1, 7.1) assigns every sound to a speaker feed at mix time. Object-based audio assigns every sound a 3D position and size; a renderer decides which speakers (or virtual positions) reproduce it at playback time. Channels are baked; objects are alive.
How object-based masters are built

Why the bed still exists
Objects are expensive: thousands of moving items strain renderers and QC. The bed anchors the mix — music, ambience and reverb stay in channels while a handful of objects carry the wow moments. Realistic immersive mixes use 10–40 objects, not hundreds.
Delivery reality
Object-based masters are delivered as ADM BWF for archiving and streaming, then rendered to whatever the platform needs: 5.1 for broadcast, binaural for headphones, 7.1.4 for home theater. The master is layout-agnostic; the render is layout-specific.

Can I hear the difference between bed and objects?
On a full Atmos system, yes — objects move precisely and independently; the bed behaves like traditional surround. On soundbars, the renderer fakes both, and the difference narrows.
Is object audio always better?
More flexible, yes. Better-sounding, not automatically — a great 5.1 mix beats a lazy object mix. Objects add capability, not quality.
What is ADM BWF?
The Audio Definition Model inside a Broadcast Wave Format file — the standard container for Atmos and MPEG-H masters.
