Spatial Audio vs Surround Sound

Surround sound is a fixed set of speakers. Spatial audio is a coordinate system — sound positioned in 3D space, rendered differently for every speaker layout and even for headphones. Understanding the difference changes how you mix.

The one-paragraph difference

5.1 and 7.1 surround are channel-based: audio is mixed to a fixed number of speaker feeds. Spatial audio is object- and scene-based: sounds carry 3D position metadata, and a renderer places them for whatever playback system exists — 5.1, 7.1.4, soundbars, headphones (binaural). Same idea of immersion, completely different pipeline.

Why object-based matters for mixing

With channels, a sound is 'left-front'. With objects, a sound is 'at (x, y, z)' with size and motion. That metadata survives any render: a soundbar places it, a 7.1.4 room places it higher, headphones place it in virtual space. One mix, every layout — which is why streaming and gaming moved to spatial.

Where channel-based still wins

Broadcast (5.1 is still the standard), legacy catalog delivery, and any chain that ends in a fixed theater layout. Channels are simpler to QC and universally compatible. Spatial is an upgrade, not a replacement — most pipelines deliver both.

Upmixing: the bridge

Note: If you have stereo or 5.1 content, upmixing turns it into a spatial master — our AI upmixing and mixing APIs output 5.1, 7.1.2 and object-based (ADM BWF) from ordinary stereo sources. It is not native Atmos mixing, but it is how existing libraries get spatial deliverables.

Common questions

Is spatial audio the same as Dolby Atmos?

Atmos is the most common spatial audio implementation. Spatial audio also includes MPEG-H, Sony 360 Reality Audio and binaural-only workflows. Atmos is the name you will hear most.

Do I need special speakers for spatial audio?

For full height-channel immersion, yes (e.g. 7.1.4). For headphones, no — binaural rendering gives spatial cues over any headphones.

Can I convert 5.1 to spatial audio?

Yes — via upmixing. It adds height and object motion estimates; the result is spatial, not authored like a native Atmos mix.
